Over the last several years, India has been edging ever-closer to reaching its zero malaria target by 2030, with malaria cases dropping by 86% between 2015 and 2021.
In addition, the World Malaria Report by WHO in 2020 showed that there was a 90% decline in malaria cases in the eastern state of Odisha, as well as an 89% decline in malaria deaths when comparing 2020 to 2015. This single state alone was responsible for more than 40% of malaria cases in India alone.

In order to achieve such a feat, the country had to ramp up their response against malaria. To do so they increased their active surveillance and rapidly scaled up their quality of diagnosis and treatment among populations in remote areas.
India also increased personal protection methods and community mobilisation, alongside other measures to help further reductions. The country hopes to eradicate the disease by 2030.
