Solar Home Systems In Bangladesh Provide Clean Energy For Over 20 Million Residents

Bangladesh is paving the way for other countries to follow suit, boasting the largest off-grid solar power program in the world which has enabled over 20 million Bangladeshis access to electricity. The project has helped reduce indoor air pollution by avoiding the consumption of 4.4 billion liters of kerosene (a pollutant). Additionally between 2003 to 2018, the project reduced greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 9.6 million tons of CO2 equivalent.

“Our partnership with the government for this program spans nearly two decades, and now our support has expanded to include other renewable energy options."

Financing from the World Bank has also helped to scale up other renewable energy options such as solar irrigation, solar mini-grids, roof-top solar, and solar farms. The integration of renewable energy into Bangladesh has meant better health and living conditions as well as more study time for children.

“Bangladesh is known for its innovative development approaches. In remote and hard to reach areas, the government successfully introduced affordable off-grid renewable energy solutions through a public-private partnership.”  said Mercy Tembon, World Bank Country Director for Bangladesh and Bhutan.
