New Law in Belgium Stops Bosses Calling You After Work Hours

A new law will be introduced in Belgium as of the 1st of February 2022, which will give workers the legal right to ignore phone calls from their employers outside of work hours. It will also prevent bosses from contacting employees when they are not at work. The aim of the new law is simple - to create a healthier work-life balance for workers and protect them against stress and burnout. A common cause for ‘burnout’ is often work related stress.

In a letter from the Minister of Civil Service for Belgiums Green Party, Petra De Sutter, she stated that allowing employees to fully disconnect from work was "linked to positive well-being outcomes such as better focus, better recuperation and a more sustainable energy level."

She also stated that employees “shall not suffer any disadvantages if he or she does not answer or read any work-related messages outside normal working hours”. These changes are being planned to be introduced into the private sector somewhere down the line, so they too can benefit from a better work-life balance.
